NextImg:Hudson Fasching itching to get back into Islanders lineup

WASHINGTON — The remarkable thing about Hudson Fasching’s leap from obscurity into everyday NHLer last season was that once he got a chance, he never found himself out of the lineup for performance reasons again.

So in the wake of a five-game run of healthy scratches, it would be easy for the 28-year-old to be disheartened.

But he is not casting a negative pall over anyone, least of all himself, as he works to get back into the fold for the Islanders.

“I think for me it’s just stay the course,” Fasching told The Post. “Keep working hard in practice. That’s kind of just the message. I think it’s kind of part of the deal. Got a lot of good players on this team. Everybody’s gonna take their turn out.

“For me it’s just trying to have a good attitude about it. Obviously you want to be playing, but you want to be a good teammate, and you gotta come to the rink with a positive attitude.”

Fasching has been in situations like this before.

Between his 2016 debut with the Sabres and his entrance into the Islanders’ lineup last season were six seasons of bouncing between the AHL and NHL, trying to claw his way into an extended chance.

In that light, being a healthy scratch for a couple weeks is no big obstacle.

“The taxi-squad year [2020-21] definitely prepared me for being a healthy scratch, essentially,” Fasching said. “I played five games the whole season. You’re kind of numb to it at this point.”

What is concerning for his chances of drawing back into the lineup is a numbers game that last year worked in his favor.

But where the Islanders always seemed to have one or two players dealing with injury at a time for most of last season, they now have an abundance of wingers who can fit into the bottom-six easily.

Oliver Wahlstrom has drawn into the lineup since Fasching has come out and has gotten positive reviews from coach Lane Lambert.

Coming off a knee injury that ended his 2022-23 season early and required surgery, Wahlstrom is still getting stronger, and more game action is the best way for him to continue doing so.

Simon Holmstrom, who was scratched for a 3-1 loss in Buffalo a little over a week ago, has done little to indicate he could be at risk of coming out of the lineup.

With Fasching and Julien Gauthier waiting in the wings, the Islanders will at some point give both another chance to play.

Fasching’s defensive acumen in particular has obvious upside for a team that is struggling to limit chances.

Lambert left the door open Tuesday for Fasching to get on the ice in against the Capitals on Thursday.

But it is still not clear whether No. 20’s chance will come sooner or later.

“That’s always the hope,” Fasching said. “You want to come back into the lineup, you want to help the team.”
