The WNBA’s third annual Commissioner’s Cup Championship tips off tonight, August 15. This year’s game will be between the defending Commissioner’s Cup winners Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty.
The Commissioner’s Cup is an in-season tournament; the first home and a way game each team plays against teams in their own conference count toward the Commissioner’s Cup standings. The teams in the east and west with the most wins in those games play in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
For every game played, the teams also donate money to a charity of their choice.
The outcome of tonight’s game has no bearing on the overall WNBA standings, there’s a prize pool of $500,000 for players in the game.
WNBA Week 10 Power Rankings rank the Aces at 1, with the Liberty close behind at 2. The teams are also 1 and 2, respectively, in league standings, and are currently the only WNBA teams to clinch a playoff berth this season.
The two teams have met twice so far this season, with each team taking one game.
