The new-look US Open Mixed Doubles tournament gets started today and one major tennis star is continuing her comeback.
Venus Williams received a wildcard entry into the tournament alongside partner Reilly Opelka. Williams, 47, and Opelka, 27, became friends partly due to their South Florida roots.
Opelka told the Tennis Channel, “We have a lot in common. We both love tennis, both love art, we both live in South Florida. We practiced together in West Palm Beach a few times. Traveling and playing a lot of the same tournaments, we went to museums and art galleries. We’re both foodies. A great friendship.”
Williams returned to tennis after over a year hiatus in the July 2025 DC Open. There, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion became the second oldest player to win a WTA tour singles match. Williams and Opelka are making their Grand Slam debut as a pairing, but Williams is no stranger to doubles tennis with 16 Grand Slam doubles titles.
Here’s how to tune in to Venus Williams’ return to the US Open.
Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka take on Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev at 12:30 p.m. ET today, Aug. 19.
The first day of the US Open Mixed Doubles tournament is airing on the ESPN+ streaming service.
Right now, ESPN+ costs $11.99/month for new subscribers.
If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the Disney+ Bundles, two of which include ESPN+. For $16.99/month, you can get Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ with ads; all three without ads costs $26.99/ month.
