NextImg:How the Mets’ skid has suddenly made their comfortable playoff hopes uncomfortable

For a while, the best thing you could say about the Mets’ situation was that no one was coming up behind them.

Now, the best thing you can say is that surely this will stop at some point, because no one is this bad for that long. Right?

The Mets better hope so, at least. Their 11th loss in 12 games on Sunday, 7-6 to the Brewers, might have been the worst gut punch of all. The Mets led 5-0 after 3 ½ innings. They led 6-5 in the eighth with Ryan Helsley on the mound. They were tied 6-6 in the ninth with Edwin Diaz on the mound. There was no 10th.

Even with a five-run lead, things are such with the Mets right now that everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Milwaukee, it should be noted, is in the exact opposite situation, which made Sunday’s walk-off blast from Isaac Collins feel all the more inevitable.
