As Aaron Judge said, the Yankees have to “clean up” some things. Same goes for the Mets.

Yes, things have been a shockingly unclean lately for both New York teams even though both somehow remain in playoff position. Here are thoughts/suggestions for our two reeling $300 million-plus teams:

1. Yankees: Bring real accountability or at least understanding about their fundamental foibles. It’s bad enough for Jazz Chisholm Jr. to be doubled off on a pop-out to second base, but it’s worse for him to suggest he would have done it all over again. Manager Aaron Boone isn’t going to call out his players publicly, but the message needs to get through.

2. Mets: Bring in hitting help. This was supposed to be “the best lineup in baseball,” and though it’s not that, it should be better than this. Nobody topped a league-average .700 OPS over a month through Tuesday (Jeff McNeil was .699, via Joe DeMayo). The biggest issue is disappointing seasons for Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez. I’d suggest hitting savant J.D. Martinez, who helped South Florida hitting partner Vientos become a 2024 star.
