There were celebrations aplenty Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where Phillies pitcher Michael Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in a 7-0 win against the Washington Nationals.
Moments after Lorenzen sealed the Phillies’ 14th no-hitter in franchise history, the 31-year-old was greeted on the mound by his teammates as the hometown crowd erupted into applause, with Lorenzen’s family, including his mom and his wife, Cassi, celebrating in the stands.
“Just walking out of the dugout, hearing the fans go wild, it gave me the chills,” Lorenzen said. “It gave that boost of energy that I needed, for sure.”
Lorenzen, who was acquired by the Phillies from the Detroit Tigers earlier this month ahead of the MLB trade deadline, threw a career-high 124 pitches.
In a broadcast of Wednesday’s game, Cassi — who has been married to Lorenzen since 2016 — can be seen capturing the wild scene on her phone while holding the couple’s 9-month-old daughter, June Elizabeth, as she celebrated next to Lorenzen’s mom.
Cassi later joined Lorenzen on the field, where the pair shared a kiss.
Lorenzen also tipped his hat to the Philadelphia crowd.
“Unbelievable, bro,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said during a toast in the clubhouse. “Welcome to Philadelphia, buddy.”
Selected 38th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2013 MLB Draft, Lorenzen made his major-league debut two years later.
He remained in Cincinnati through the 2021 season and signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels that November.
Lorenzen began the 2023 season with the Tigers, whom he signed a one-year deal with in December 2022, before he was traded to the Phillies in August for prospect Hao-Yu Lee.
The 2023 All-Star has won both of his starts with the Phillies, giving up just two earned runs while striking out 10 in 17 innings of work.
With Wednesday’s performance, Lorenzen sports a 3.23 ERA, which is 12th-best in the majors.
