NextImg:How Jets’ Armand Membou reacted to worst game as a pro

HERTFORDSHIRE, England — Jets rookie tackle Armand Membou is coming off his worst game as a pro last Sunday against the Cowboys.

Membou had four penalties, three that were accepted, and allowed five pressures in the game, according to PFF.

“I would just say it was up and down,” Membou said Thursday. “I just had so many penalties. I just have to try to turn it around next week.”

It was the first bad game the first-round pick has had as a rookie.

Overall, Membou has looked really solid and has not needed much of an acclimation period to the NFL.

“I think I’ve had, personally, a solid start to the season,” Membou said. “I’m trying to still get better and help get the team the first win.”

The Jets face the Broncos in London on Sunday, and Denver enters the game with a league-high 21 sacks.

Membou and the rest of the offensive line have to protect Justin Fields for the Jets to have a chance at their first victory of the season.

“They have a really good defensive line,” Membou said. “I think they’ve led the league in sacks the last two years. The O-line knows the challenge that we have this week, and we’re ready to attack it.”

As for the trip to England, the 21-year-old seems to be enjoying himself.

“It’s pretty cool,” Membou said. “It definitely caught me off guard a little bit hearing people actually talk with British accents in real life and their little catch phrases.”

There has been a question of whether Fields is holding onto the ball for too long before passing.

Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand defended the quarterback Thursday.

“I think he’s getting rid of the ball at the time in which the play is telling him to get rid of the ball,” Engstrand said. “If we’re trying to push the ball down the field on a play-action pass, when do they start the stop clock? That’s going to take a little bit longer, as opposed to throwing quick game and throwing a slant or throwing an out route. So, when we want to try to utilize some of those plays, it is going to inherently take a little bit longer for him to get rid of the ball. But is he sitting back there and just hanging onto the ball in the pocket in drop-back pass? I really don’t believe he is.”

Edge Jermaine Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday and seems to be on track to play Sunday for the first time in four games.

RB Kene Nwangwu (hamstring) also was limited and should make his return.

DT Quinnen Williams (groin) was limited as well, but is expected to play.
