As a kid, shagging fly balls in the outfield during the Home Run Derby sounds like a thrilling idea — until it isn’t.

During Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s championship-winning round Monday night, the Blue Jays first baseman smoked a line drive into the outfield and appeared to drill one unlucky kid shagging fly balls directly in the face.

Per Dodgers writer Blake Harris, the line drive was hit at 115.8 mph, careening off the young fan’s head and sending him down in a heap.

One Mariners fan at the Derby spotted the unfortunate outfielder after the ball struck him, telling fans he seemed to be alright.

“Kid is all treated with an ice pack,” @RealTomBentley wrote on Twitter. “Crowd cheered for him.”

Guerrero Jr. went on to hit 25 home runs during the final round, which was good enough to surpass Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena for the Derby title.

The young Toronto star, 24, joined his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., as a Home Run Derby champion — the elder Guerrero won it while he was on the Angels in 2007 — becoming the first father-son duo in MLB history to both capture the Derby title.

Guerrero Jr. hit 72 total home runs during the event, overpowering Mookie Betts in the first round and outlasting fan favorite Julio Rodríguez in the second round before taking down Arozarena.

It’s not the first time shagging fly balls during the Derby has been dangerous for the kids in the outfield, who are generally selected to participate through MLB community groups, partnerships and contests.

Some fans were reminded of an incident during the 2021 Home Run Derby when Mets star Pete Alonso drilled a child with a line drive.

The Derby always takes place before the MLB All-Star Game, which will be held on Tuesday night in Seattle’s T-Mobile Park.
