Val Kilmer

Hollywood is in mourning.

Tributes are rolling in for the late Val Kilmer, who passed away April 1 from pneumonia at the age of 65. He had previously survived a bout of throat cancer which damaged his vocal cords, hindering his memorable acting career much too soon.

Several actors and filmmakers took to social media in light of the “tremendously sad news,” as Heat director Michael Mann wrote in his statement, to remember the late actor for his prolific career.

“I always marveled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character,” Mann wrote on social media. “After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news.”

Josh Brolin shared a photo of himself and Kilmer, which has already netted north of 100,000 likes on Instagram within just hours.

“I’m going to miss you,” he wrote. “You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts.”

Josh Gad thanked Kilmer for “defining so many of the movies of my childhood,” adding, “You truly were an icon.”

Matthew Modine also credited Kilmer with landing him his role in Full Metal Jacket. “RIP Val Kilmer. If it wasn’t for our chance encounter at the Source in 1985, I may never have been cast in FULL METAL JACKET. Thanks, Val,” he wrote on X.

Jennifer Tilly also recounted a telling memory she had of the actor’s audition for The Doors, in which he delivered one of his most iconic performances as Jim Morrison.

“They paired together potential Jims with potential Pamelas. And they were running behind so we were spilling out of the casting office, sitting on the porch, the lawn, and the driveway,” she wrote on X. “All of a sudden, a sixties convertible came screeching up, blaring Doors Music at top volume. And a guy jumped out and strode inside: He had wild hair and he was barefoot, shirtless, and wearing nothing but a pair of tight leather pants.”

She continued, “We all looked at each other like… Who is this guy? We were more than a little shook by the sheer audacity of his entrance. Well of course it was Val Kilmer and from that minute on, nobody else stood a chance.”

Kilmer’s career and his battle with cancer were captured in the 2021 Prime Video documentary Val.
