A man charged with planning to kidnap and murder British television presenter Holly Willoughby has been ordered to remain in custody.
The Associated Press reports that Gavin Plumb, a security officer who works at a shopping center, appeared in court on Friday, Oct. 6, in connection with the case. Plumb was arrested earlier this month and charged with soliciting a man, identified as David Nelson, to commit murder and incitement to commit a kidnapping.
The conspiracy was thwarted just a week before Nelson was due to travel to the U.K.
Willoughby has famously hosted the British daytime television show This Morning on ITV since 2006, amongst other hosting duties across Dancing on Ice and Celebrity Juice. She has not returned to This Morning since the suspect was arrested.
The presenter has since been placed in police protection and announced she would be leaving the show to protect herself and her family.
Willoughby announced her departure this week with an emotional statement shared on social media that read, “This is such a difficult goodbye, you are incredible and I forever will be proud of what we’ve done together. Thank you to everyone at ITV for being supportive. To every guest who has sat on our sofa, thank you.”
The statement continued, “It’s been an honor to just be part of its story and I know this story has many chapters left to go. Sadly, however, I now feel like I have to make this decision for me and my family. I will miss you all so much.”
ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment Kevin Lygo praised Willoughby for her “unique brand of warmth, energy, humor and fun” in a statement to Sky News, saying, “Everyone on the program will miss her enormously. She remains a much-loved member of the ITV family and we look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.”
U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also wished her well during a recent appearance on This Morning.
“I’m so sorry to hear everything going on with Holly,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, per AP. “I just want to send my best to her and her family.”
A motive for Plumb’s alleged plan to kidnap and murder Willoughby is still unknown, but police uncovered “sinister messages” threatening to “seriously harm” her in his home.
Plumb is expected to have a plea hearing on Nov. 3.
