Jenna Bush Hager‘s husband, Henry Hager, joined her for the very first time on Today. But first, he sought out some much-needed advice from the pros.
Henry surprised Jenna with his own segment called “Henry’s Hosting Bootcamp” which showed him sneaking around the NBC studios to get advice from the likes of Savannah Guthrie, Tom Llamas, Dwayne Wade, and — Jenna’s favorite person at NBC — Hoda Kotb.
“This is not my day job,” Henry said in the segment as he struggled to even be let into the studios. “I don’t know what I’m doing so I’m gonna go inside and get some tips from some pros.”
The first stop he made was to Guthrie’s office, where she told him to channel “that cute Henry that worked on [Jenna’s] father’s campaign” and “snuck out in the wee hours.”
She also advised him to share some embarrassing stories about Jenna. “She can dish it, but can she take it?” Guthrie asked.
Next up was Wade, who was guest hosting Today that week with Jenna. “It’s going great,” he told Henry. “I kind of got a little feel of what it’s like being married to Jenna. I’ve learned to let her talk.”
But Kotb’s appearance was the most shocking part of the segment. She retired from daytime television in January but it looks like she managed to make an appearance at NBC for Henry and Jenna. Kotb, of course, had the funniest advice to offer Henry, considering she is “the one person who knows [Jenna] best,” as he put it.
“I got some good advice,” Kotb told him. “Number one, never point out any of her stains, because she’s gonna have one here, one here, and one here.” She then advised him to always “have a blow drier at the ready.”
“You know why?” she asked Henry. “Armpit stains. Yes, really.”
But she left him with the most touching message of all: “And most importantly, you have the best seat in the house.”
Jenna was already moved to tears when the broadcast returned to the studio. “What is happening? That’s so sweet, thank you for doing that,” she said as she wiped away her tears. “I miss Hoda, she’s the best.”
Henry will return Friday, March 28, to co-host one more time. But he’s already gunning for a permanent position on the show. He wrote his name on the Today With Jenna & Friends mugs to make it official.
Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
