Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce caught some flack during the Super Bowl when cameras caught him shoving head coach Andy Reid on the sidelines – a controversial moment which Today hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb claimed they “didn’t like.”
Both Kotb and Bush Hager revealed during Monday’s broadcast that they watched the big game at home with their kids. But the tense moment with the Chiefs’ star player may have sent the wrong message for many children (or “Team Taylor,” as Kotb called them), who were tuning in to the Super Bowl for the first time.
She said, “I mean, my girls were like, ‘Which one’s 87?!’ The fact that they know [Kelce is] number 87.”
She added that, despite their excitement, her daughters “didn’t like” seeing Kelce shove Reid on the sidelines. “My daughters said, ‘Why did he do that? Why did he push that older man?'” Kotb recalled, before adding, “He was frustrated he wasn’t in the game, there was a fumble, all that frustration, [but] all a little kid saw was strong guy pushing an older man.”
Bush Hager agreed: “I didn’t like that. I’m with Haley,” she said, referring to Kotb’s daughter. “I kept asking [my husband] Henry, whats happening here? You want to be a team. Part of being a team is you respect the coach, it’s sportsmanship. I was trying to teach my kids that.”
“It’s weird because I don’t think so many young girls have been into football until this game,” Kotb said. She added that she didn’t think her daughters would have been as invested if it weren’t for Kelce.
Viewers at home appeared to feel similarly. “Sit him down! I don’t care who his gf is,” one fan wrote on X.
Bush Hager also mentioned that the tense moment was even broadcast on Nickelodeon, where a kid-friendly version of the game aired.
“By the way, Nickelodeon played it. Because my oldest, Mila, went to a super bowl party… and she watched it on Nickelodeon,” she said. She proceeded to laugh as she recalled that her daughter even asked, “What was the deal with the slime pouring on the football players’ heads?”
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
