Hoda Kotb spent much of the start of Thursday’s (Jan. 11) Today broadcast as she did yesterday’s: Getting to know her guest co-host!

Kotb grilled Today Show co-anchor Sheinelle Jones, who was joining her in Jenna Bush Hager‘s absence, about her time in high school and college. The impromptu interview ranged from Kotb asking Jones about everything from her high school superlatives to when she had her first alcoholic beverage.

“I’m picturing you in high school, let me guess, you were most school spirited,” Kotb said as they pulled up a picture of Jones in high school. “You were most likely to succeed.”

“Sorry for my forehead,” Jones quipped as she saw the photo. “You are so sweet! I had two, one who goes out of her way to help others and then I got most likely to be on TV.”

Kotb continued, “I don’t know if you guys have ever been to Philadelphia with Sheinelle Jones. Sheinelle runs Philly.”

The comment sparked laughter from Jones and the Today stage crew. She began to protest and added, “That’s you in New Orleans!”

But Kotb wasn’t going to let Jones change the topic of conversation. “We’re not talking about me, we’re talking about you,” she fired back.

Jones then asked Kotb, “Why don’t you ever let me turn it on you?”

The Today host wasted no time at all as she promptly replied, “No, because this is my show!” She then continued to question Jones about what it’s like when she gets to visit her hometown.

Jones was filling in for Bush Hager, who has been out since Wednesday because she was feeling “under the weather.”

But Kotb promised her co-host will be back on the show “soon.”
