Gov. Kathy Hochul will undergo a a short medical procedure Friday to remove a spot of skin cancer on her nose, which she said was discovered during a routine checkup a few weeks ago.
“I’m going to have a small removal procedure. I’m not going under. It’s a local anesthesia. It’ll be occurring Friday morning. I’ll be back to work about an hour later,” Hochul said.
The Governor used the opportunity to warn others to get routine screenings and use sun protection especially if their family has a history of skin disease.
“There’s about 6 million diagnoses a day from the CDC and I want to make sure everybody’s smart about this. Use your suntan lotion,” Hochul said.
“Make sure your kids are protected. For the Irish it’s very common, just about everybody in my family,” she added.
Hochul said doctors first spotted a “tiny speck” on her nose several weeks ago during a routine checkup.
It turned out to be basal cell carcinoma, which the Mayo Clinic says is a malignant type of cancer that often develops in areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, usually as a result of overexposure to UV rays.

The cancer often does not metastasize to other areas of the body.
Hochul says she expects to have to wear a bandage on her nose for a bit, but will otherwise make a speedy recovery.
