A Georgia high school football player was killed in a hit-and-run while trying to save an injured dog – and local police are still working to identify and arrest the culprit.
Samuel Johnson Jr., 16, was walking down a street in Valdosta around 6:15 p.m. Saturday when he noticed an injured dog in the road, the Valdosta Police Department said.
“Johnson saw a dog that had been hit by an unknown vehicle, so he went to assist the injured dog. While trying to rescue the injured dog, Johnson was struck and killed by a second vehicle traveling through the area,” the department’s official statement read.
The car that hit Johnson did not stop, and a passerby later found the teen lying in a grass median while the now-deceased dog lay in the road, police said.
Johnson was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
Johnson was an offensive linebacker on the celebrated Valdosta High School Wildcats football team, the team’s roster showed.
His teammates and coaches were “heartbroken and devastated” by his sudden death, the team’s official statement on Instagram said.
The emotional post featured a photo of Johnson holding his yellow football helmet up in the air amid a throng of teammates.
The car that struck Johnson was identified as a dark-colored Dodge Charger with damage on the driver’s side front bumper, Valdosta Police said.
The car was located and taken into custody on Monday, the department announced.
The Valdosta Police Department did not immediately return The Post’s request for a comment.
Johnson will be honored at a memorial service at Perimeter Road Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, his obituary said.
Johnson’s death came just one day before Brandon Smith, who played football for Manchester High School, died suddenly on Sunday, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
Smith’s team played in the Georgia high school football championships Monday night, the outlet added.
