Tiger Woods is returning to the golf course Thursday, but don’t expect him to contend.
Woods will play in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas this weekend in his first competitive action since last April’s Master’s tournament when he withdrew during the third round with plantar fasciitis.
The 15-time major champion is the biggest long shot in the star-studded 20-man field to win the event.
Woods, who hosts the Hero World Challenge, is priced at +8000 to win the tournament at DraftKings Sportsbook, well behind the next-lowest golfer, Lucas Glover (+5000).
Oddsmakers aren’t giving Woods much of a shot to finish high – let alone win – the event either.
Woods is +900 to finish in the top five and +260 to finish in the top 10, despite the small field.
Viktor Hovland, who has won the tournament in each of the past two years, is the consensus favorite to win the tournament, sitting at +400 at DraftKings.
Scottie Scheffler trails Hovland at +450 odds, while Max Homa and Collin Morikawa sit at +800 with the third-best odds.
Woods, who underwent surgery on his right ankle in April, enters the weekend having played in just five tournaments since suffering severe injuries to his legs in a February 2021 car crash.
The golf legend has made the cut in four of those starts, although he withdrew early from two of them.
It’s Woods’ first time competing in the World Hero Challenge since 2019 when he finished fourth.
Woods withdrew from last year’s tournament with the same plantar fasciitis injury that cut his Master’s run short.
He has won the Hero World Challenge five times since the inaugural event in 2000, most recently winning in 2011.
Woods indicated this week he was feeling healthy but plans to play “maybe a tournament a month” going forward.
