A hero off-duty Port Authority cop plucked three people from a fiery upstate wreck on his way home from work Monday, authorities said.
Police Officer Kevin Colomba, 35 — a seven-year veteran of the force and a captain with the Warwick Fire Department with 17 years there under his belt — had just finished a midnight shift with the Port Authority at the George Washington Bridge when he came upon the head-on crash on Route 17A in Tuxedo around 7 a.m. Monday, officials said.
Colomba jumped into action, pulling the driver of one vehicle to safety before turning to two people in the second car as flames began to engulf the vehicle, according to the Port Authority police union.
The cop pulled the second driver through the driver’s side window as the fire spread — with an injured woman still trapped in the passenger seat of the burning wreck.
Undaunted, Colomba yelled for the woman to cover her face and used a punch-out tool to break out the glass, then yanked the passenger to safety as well, authorities said.
The Tuxedo Fire Department then arrived to douse the flames.
All three victims were rushed to area hospitals and are expected to survive, officials said.
“Whether on duty or off-duty, Port Authority police officers are committed to their oath and put others before themselves,” PA Police Benevolent Association President Frank Conti told The Post.
“Police Officer Colomba saved two people’s lives and his own by his quick, heroic actions,” Conti said of Colomba, who is assigned to the George Washington Bridge.
The union chief wasn’t the only one giving the hero cop a shout-out.
“We are proud of our son Kevin,” his mom, Barbara Columba, posted on X. “He is so dedicated to his job as a PO & firefighter. We don’t know how he does it. He’d be the 1st one in to run towards danger without hesitation. He is a leader & a true inspiration.”
Colomba also got kudos from the Warwick Fire Department.
“We are truly proud to have Captain Columba as a member,” the department said on Facebook.
