A 58-year-old Hawaiian surfer lost his right foot in a weekend shark attack off the coast of Honolulu.

Mike Morita was gliding over the waves near Kewalo Basin about 7 a.m. Sunday when he was bitten by the shark, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

Officials said the predator was believed to be an 8-foot-long tiger shark, KHON 2 reported.

Fellow surfers used their board leashes as tourniquets to stem the bleeding and possibly save his life, said Honolulu Ocean Safety.

The victim’s children, daughter Keani and son Kamu, thanked the nearby surfers and first responders for their quick actions to save their dad.

Morita “is a frequent surfer of this spot for about 40 years and is well-known in the community. Thanks to the help of the brave surfers, first responders, and staff at Queens Hospital, my dad can live another day with his family,” the children wrote on a GoFundMe page.

“Unfortunately, due to the severe injuries suffered from the attack, he lost his right foot,” they said, adding that he was awaiting another surgery.

“His spirits are high and he has accepted his injury. He is embracing the challenges that he will face ahead and with God, his family, and his friends by his side he will remain positive and get through this,” the children wrote.

On Monday, signs still warned people to stay out of the water, while lifeguards and officials with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources patrolled the area.

“I saw the board, and I said, ‘Oh my God! Wow!’ because he’s so close to Ala Moana and that this moment there’s so many people on the beach,” surfer Felipe Trujillo told the news outlet about the incident.

Surfers said they see sharks in the area quite often but that they’ve never seen the predators actually attack a surfer.

“All these years I’ve been surfing, I’ve never heard of shark attacks by [the] Ala Moana side, they’re kind of rare,” Eric Kagawa told KHON. “Plus, it’s super shallow out there.”

According to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, the last shark attack in Kewalos took place in 2002.

Marine experts said the recent rainy weather may have contributed to the attack.

“It’s right at the mouth of the Ala Wai Canal, so all the water that runs down the mountains and feeds into the Ala Wai was being flushed down there,” Waikiki Aquarium Director Andrew Rossiter told the news station.

“And that carries all these interesting scents and smells and garbage and things that will just attract the sharks in from outside,” he added.

Rossiter said the shark that attacked Morita was “probably an adolescent, a little bit less selective in what it’s gonna bite.”
