NextImg:Happy Gilmore — a real high school golfer — commits to play at Ball State

He’s going to his happy place — this time for real.

Happy Gilmore, an Indiana high school golfer with the same name as the 1996 Adam Sandler movie, announced his commitment to play Division I college golf at Ball State University on Friday.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity Coach Fleck has given me!” Gilmore said on Twitter. “I would like to thank my family, my friends and coaches who push me everyday!”

Gilmore, whose real name is actually Landon, started competing in golf tournaments around the age of 6 and immediately got the nickname “Happy,” after the famous golf comedy.

Hearing the news of the high schooler, the Hollywood star responded to the commitment tweet with some positivity and encouragement.

“Go get em, Happy. Pulling for you,” Sandler said.

The rest of Twitter had a field day with the announcement, with plenty of users making references to the flick.

The real Happy Gilmore will be playing college golf at Ball State.

“Your move @ShooterMcGavin_,” one user said while another asked Gilmore when hockey tryouts would be.

While the real Gilmore never had dreams of becoming a hockey player, his talent on the course seems right out of Shooter McGavin’s storyline.

Gilmore has shined on the boys’ golf team at Bloomington South, finishing T-7 earlier this month at the Indiana high school boy state tournament, where he shot even par over 36 holes.

Gilmore also won the June 8 IHSAA regional at Country Oaks in Montgomery and shot 66 at a US Junior Amateur qualifier.

Adam Sandler and Kevin James are spotted golfing together in Pikesville, Maryland.

Golfweek/Sagarin boys rankings placed Gilmore at 497th.

While he won’t get the coveted gold jacket like his namesake did in the movie, the real Gilmore will now see how he stacks up at the NCAA level.
