Hacks star Jean Smart is calling for Hollywood to skip awards season this year amid the devastating wildfires that have swept Los Angeles.
The Golden Globe winning actress released a statement on Instagram addressed to television networks, asking they nix their awards season broadcasts and instead donate towards wildfire relief.
Smart shared a written statement on Instagram that read: “ATTENTION! With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters.”
Smart’s statement comes as several Hollywood events have been canceled or delayed due to the wildfires, including the Critics Choice Awards ceremony, which was pushed back from Jan. 12 to Jan. 26. The Screen Actors Guild also canceled Wednesday’s (Jan. 8) live announcement of the nominations.
Smart won her second Golden Globe during Sunday’s (Jan. 5) ceremony, which aired on CBS.
She has also been nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, while Hacks was nominated for a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Nearly 180,000 residents have been forced to evacuate Los Angeles County due to the wildfires. At least five deaths have been reported, but those numbers are expected to rise, per CNN. Thousands of structures have been destroyed across the county.
Several celebrities have been impacted by the wildfires, including actors James Woods, who lost his home, and Jamie Lee Curtis, who held back tears on The Tonight Show as she shared that her neighborhood in Pacific Palisades was directly impacted by the wildfires.
Curtis has since vowed to donate $1 million to relief efforts.
The L.A. wildfires are turning out to be the “costliest” blaze in U.S. history and may exceed $20 billion, according to a recent CNBC report.
