Gus Alfieri, a former St. John’s University basketball star and long-time St. Anthony’s high school coach, died Monday at the age of 87, the school announced.

The Long Island native played three seasons at St. John’s under legendary coach Joe Lapchick, averaging 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 43.6 percent shooting over 72 career games.

Alfieri helped lead St. John’s to the 1959 NIT championship — which at the time was the equivalent of winning the NCAA Tournament — by scoring 15 points during a 76-71 win over Bradley at Madison Square Garden on March 21, 1959.

Alfieri moved to the sidelines following his playing career.

He ran the All-American Basketball Camp for more than 50 years and spent nearly two decades coaching the boys’ basketball team at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington from 1968-1985.

Alfieri led the Friars to a 328-106 record, two New York State championships and four NSCHSAA crowns.

The court at the school was dedicated to him in 2016 when he was inducted into the St. Anthony’s Hall of Fame.

He entered the St. John’s Hall of Fame in 2023.

Alfieri wrote multiple books including “Lapchick: The Life of a Legendary Player and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball” and “The Heart of a Champion: A Basketball Coach’s Memoir of a Championship Team” that chronicled his 1973-74 season with the Friars.
