NextImg:Guardians give Andres Gimenez $106.5 million contract extension

Andres Gimenez will be in Cleveland for a long time — at least until the Guardians ever decide to trade him.

The former Mets prospect agreed to a seven-year, $106.5 million contract extension on Tuesday with an option that could make it an eight-year, $128 million deal, according to The Post’s Joel Sherman.

Gimenez, 24, also received a $4 million signing bonus.

The key piece in the Mets’ trade for Francisco Lindor in 2021, Gimenez played in his first full MLB season last year and earned an All-Star nod, slashing .297/.371/.466 with 17 home runs, 26 doubles, 69 RBIs, 20 steals and 66 runs while winning a Gold Glove at second base.

He finished sixth in the American League MVP voting.

Gimenez, once one of the Mets’ top prospects, was dealt along with Amed Rosario, Josh Wolf, and Isaiah Greene for Lindor and Carlos Carrasco.

The Mets later gave Lindor a 10-year, $341 million contract extension.

While that was territory the Guardians clearly weren’t going to go for Lindor, they are trying to lock up some of their core on cheaper deals.

The Athletic reported that the team has discussed contracts with Rosario, starter Triston McKenzie, outfielder Steven Kwan, and reliever Trevor Stephan.

Cleveland signed star third baseman Jose Ramirez to a contract extension last year worth $141 million over seven seasons.
