The Grizzlies are making a move a week ahead of the NBA trade deadline to set themselves up to be a contender next season.
Memphis traded Steven Adams to the Rockets for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday night.
The Grizzlies will get two second-round picks in 2024 and a second-rounder in 2025 as part of the deal, the NBA insider reported.
Neither player had suited up for their respective teams this season — Oladipo hasn’t played since suffering a patellar tendon injury in his left knee and Adams underwent season-ending surgery on his right knee in October — but the deal allows Memphis to regroup for 2024-25.
It also gives the Grizzlies, who sit in 13th in the Western Conference and are 18-29 headed into their game against the Cavaliers on Thursday, to create some flexibility with the salary cap and add draft capital for the offseason in the summer.
The Grizzlies had been expected to compete in the West this season, even with the 25-game suspension that Ja Morant had to sit through to begin the season.
Nevertheless, Memphis’ season has gone off the tracks a bit, and it would appear that the front office is looking toward next year as the time the team will be back in the title contender conversation.
Morant, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this month, is expected to be healthy for the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Along with Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane make up the rest of the nucleus that the Grizzlies want to build around, Wojnarowski reported.
The belief is that Adams will be healthy by the start of next season and could help the Rockets on the defensive side of the ball.
The Rockets sit at 22-25 this year.
