NextImg:Golfer J.T. Poston costs himself $260,000 at 3M Open with risky decision on final hole

Golfer J.T. Poston’s wallet is now more than a quarter of a million dollars lighter than it could have been.

Poston cost himself roughly $260,000 when he triple-bogeyed the 18th hole of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities on Sunday.

The 30-year-old golfer opted for an aggressive strategy on the final hole in an attempt to best the field, but it backfired and he settled for a three-way tie for second that netted him $590,200.

Though Poston would have won $850,000 had he finished in second place solo, it appears he has no qualms over the costly decision.

“Not out here to finish 2nd. Trying to win. Would make that decision 10 times out of 10 under circumstances,” Poston tweeted Sunday evening.

It was Lee Hodges who won the 3M Open by seven strokes ( 24-under) to claim his first-ever PGA Tour victory.

He led Poston by just three strokes entering the par-five 18th hole.

Hodges hit his ball into the rough, while Poston’s shot landed inside the red hazard line and near the water.

Poston then made the costly call to go for for the green – 214 yards away – instead of playing it conservatively and laying up.

He needed to cover the water for the shot to work but instead hit the rocks and a sign inside the water.

Poston lost a stroke on his drop but still could have finished in second with a double bogey.

However, disaster again struck for the two-time PGA Tour event winner when he missed his double-bogey putt from five feet.

Poston settled for the triple bogey that dropped him to 17-under into a tie with Martin Laird and Kevin Streelman.

He posted a 69 on the final day.

“At the end of the day it’s not the way I wanted to end, but I had to try and give it a shot and see if there was some way I could make three there at the end and put some pressure on Lee,” Poston said, according to Golfdigest.com. “It was a shot that was going to be hard to pull off, but we weren’t playing for second place. I had to give it a shot.”

Laird caught Poston with an eagle on the 18th hole to finish with 64, while Streelman posted a birdie to finish with 67 in the final round.
