The Giants had an incredible and bizarre victory in their grasp and with it, their season would be resuscitated. It was all there for them, riding Saquon Barkley and a powerhouse defense and on the precipice of a 10-7 triumph that had to be seen to be believed.
Instead, the Giants are on the precipice of a lost season, with a devastating late collapse now on their resume. They turned sure success into abject failure in a 13-10 overtime loss to the Jets at rain-soaked MetLife Stadium. The winning points came on a Greg Zeurlein 33-yard field goal, put in motion by a 30-yard pass interference penalty on cornerback Adoree Jackson.
This goes down as an all-time blown opportunity for the Giants.
The game appeared to be signed, sealed and delivered for the Giants when Kayvon Thibodeaux sacked Zach Wilson for a 15-yard loss on fourth down with 1:26 left in regulation. The Giants led 10-7, milked the clock and sent Graham Gano out for a 35-yard field goal with 24 seconds to go.
He missed, incredibly, and the Jets were out of time outs and back on their 25-yard line.
Wilson hit Garrett Wilson for 29 yards and then hit Allen Lazard for 29 yards, with the Jets able to spike the ball with one second remaining.
Greg Zuelein then nailed a 35-yard field goal to force overtime.
In the extra session, the Giants — playing without injured starting quarterback Daniel Jones and newly injured backup Tyrod Taylor — had no shot.
Practice squad activation Tommy DeVito and the offense went three-and-out, the Jets took over on their 39-yard line and Zach Wilson on third-and-10 hit Garrett Wilson for 11 yards. After Jackson’s pass interference penalty, Zuerlein ended it.
The Giants fell to 2-6. The Jets are 4-3.
DeVito in his NFL debut ran for the Giants’ lone touchdown and Barkley showed remarkable stamina, running 36 times for 128 hard-fought yards. But the Giants finished with minus-9 yards passing and that proved to be too much to overcome.
