Saquon Barkley made sure to defend his quarterback after Daniel Jones exited with a neck injury and was examined on the sidelines.
The Giants’ running back yelled at one fan, perhaps several fans, who had been talking “crazy” about Jones after he left their 31-16 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday and didn’t return.
“Stop reaching and trying to make it a me vs fans thing I’m not gonna just sit there and not say anything while you talk crazy to 8 after he just got hurt… buddy knew he was in the wrong,” Barkley wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that referenced a separate video saying he was “beefing with fans on the sidelines.”
Barkley, who missed his third consecutive game while recovering from a high-ankle sprain, donned a black hat, black shirt and shorts at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
It’s unclear what the fan, or group of fans, said to Barkley that prompted him to shout back at them.
The Giants have dealt with plenty of injuries — from Barkley and left tackle Andrew Thomas to rookie center John Michael Schmitz and Micah McFadden — but their latest catastrophe came when in the fourth quarter of their latest loss, when Andrew Van Ginkel tore around Giants offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu and sacked Jones — while also causing the neck injury.
Jones acknowledged that he dealt with a similar issue in 2021, but the other details surrounding his injury remained unknown as of Sunday night.
“I’m in some pain, physical game, meet with the doctors and trainers and go from there,” Jones told reporters following the game. “It’s just my neck, my neck’s sore.”
And if that injury caused a stir among some Giants fans, Jones at least had Barkley supporting him.
Barkley likely wanted to be clear about his interaction with fans after a week in which offensive lineman Evan Neal got himself in some hot water — eventually apologizing — for calling Giants fans who booed “fair-weatherd” and “sheep.”
Barkley hasn’t played since sustaining his ankle injury in their Week 2 comeback against the Cardinals, which provided a sobering reality of the 26-year-old’s contract situation that started with the franchise tag in March and continued until he signed a one-year deal the first day of training camp.
When Jones signed his four-year, $160 million deal with the Giants, that allowed the organization to then make a last-minute pivot and use the franchise tag on Barkley.
