NextImg:Giants give Evan Neal update after his Friday concussion

Giants right tackle Evan Neal “feels better than he did the day before,” according to head coach Brian Daboll, but he still remained in concussion protocol and didn’t practice Saturday.

Neal’s injury occurred during a collision on a running play Friday, though Daboll added it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

“He’s good,” Daboll said. “I mean, he’s as good as can be. He’s just in the protocol. … Again, we’ll take it slow with those things and let the doctors and training staff kinda go through all that.”

Daboll will always be “cautious with those guys,” he said. Neal, whom the Giants selected No. 7 overall in the 2022 draft, had emerged as a key part of their offensive line.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas just signed a five-year, $117.5 million extension to continue blocking Daniel Jones’ blind side.

Neal’s absence on Saturday led to additional shuffling.

Matt Peart filled in for Neal at right tackle again. Ben Bredeson was the starting center, with Thomas at left tackle, Joshua Ezeudu at left guard and Mark Glowinski at right guard, respectively.

At this point, Darrian Beavers has tried to take training camp day by day.

There are the still unknowns, which is inevitable because the second-year linebacker is recovering from a left ACL tear and trying to earn a starting spot.

Beavers has tried to avoid any mental hesitation as he gradually inches closer to the physicality that impressed the Giants when they selected him with their sixth-round pick last year.

“There’s so much stuff that I have to do pre-snap before a play to even worry about my knee, to be honest,” Beavers said. “So like I said, when I’m out there, I got so much other stuff going on that that’s the last thing on my mind.”

Beavers said he doesn’t know if he will be limited in preseason games, which begin at the Lions on Friday, when the true contact and true matchups arrive.

“I’d say maybe it made me sit back and humble myself, not to take it for granted, I would say, in a way,” Beavers said. “But besides that, it’s just football, and when you’re on that field, everything blanks out and you just want to play football.”

TE Darren Waller, who appeared to have injured his finger during practice Friday, was fine, Daboll said.

He practiced Saturday, and he caught a touchdown pass from Jones in the red zone.

Waller also caught another pass as Jones rolled right, with Kayvon Thibodeaux chasing.

G Jack Anderson, WR Sterling Shepard, and DL Leonard Williams all returned to practice Saturday.

LB Azeez Ojulari needed another day, according to Daboll, similar to the two rest days the Giants gave to Williams.

“I think it just depends on what it is you’re resting for the player,” Daboll said, when asked about the reasoning for his strategy to give players two consecutive rest days. “I meet with those medical guys daily, come up with a plan for each individual player, and in this case, it’ll actually be another day two for him. So it’ll be the day off tomorrow and get ready to go back on Monday.”

DL Ryder Anderson, who exited practice Thursday after he was knocked to the ground by Glowinski, hurt his triceps and likely will be out a few weeks.
