Observations from the Giants’ joint practice with the Lions on Wednesday.
The first-round pick looks legit. In the first 7-on-7 period, CB Deonte Banks blanketed Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown.
When the pass came that way, Banks swatted the ball to the grass with his left hand.
Before that, Banks was all over WR Josh Reynolds and forced an incompletion.
Banks’ combination of speed and size shows up on the field.
It looked as if things were going to get overheated when Giants OLB Oshane Ximines and Lions OT Germain Ifedi locked up after one play and kept hold of each other, exchanging menacing glances and words.
There were no punches thrown before the two players were separated.
Both teams abided by the guidelines set down by their head coaches and were rewarded with quality work.
Jordon Riley made a play.
The seventh-round pick out of Oregon put a hit on RB David Montgomery, causing a fumble that Kayvon Thibodeaux scooped up on the right side, much to the delight of the Giants’ players lining the sideline.
Riley is a load at 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, which is why defensive coordinator Wink Martindale described being near him as “going to California and standing next to a Redwood.’’
OT Devery Hamilton and RB Gary Brightwell sustained injuries on Tuesday that prevented them from practicing Wednesday.
Head coach Brian Daboll said the injuries are not long-term, but both players could be out a week. DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (groin) remains out.
WR Sterling Shepard was given his normal rest-and-recovery day.
