Gabe Kapler’s time with the Giants has come to an unceremonious end.
After taking over the helm in San Francisco in 2020, Kapler has been let go as manager of the club, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi announced in a statement Friday afternoon.
“After making this recommendation to ownership and receiving their approval, I met with Gabe today to inform him of our decision,” Zaidi said. “In his tenure as Giants manager, Gabe led our team through an unprecedented pandemic in 2020 and a franchise-record 107 wins and postseason berth in 2021.
“He has been dedicated and passionate in his efforts to improve the on-field performance of the San Francisco Giants and I have tremendous respect for him as a colleague and friend.”
After helming the Phillies to a 161-163 record over 2018-19, Kapler took over the Giants during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, having his best campaign a year later when San Francisco rattled off 107 wins to take the National League West crown.
For his efforts, Kapler won the National League Manager of the Year.
But after a hard-fought five-game NLDS with the Dodgers, the team lost the final game at home in San Francisco.
San Francisco finished .500 last year but was competitive for most of the summer this year, though they had losing records from July through September, going 8-17 under his stewardship this month as the team officially fell out of the race.
According to The Athletic, the team held meetings in August to try to right the ship, but those instances did not include Kapler.
“We’ve got to make some big changes in here to create that winning culture,” pitcher Logan Webb said, per the outlet. “We want to show up every single year and try to win the whole thing. … I’m just sick of losing, to be honest.”
Overall, Kapler finishes his time with the Giants with a 295-248 record and one postseason appearance.
