NextImg:Giants fans should give Daniel Jones final chance to prove he can be the guy

Daniel Jones got paid, wore a “$40 million man” albatross around his fragile neck, then he got humbled and crumbled in 2023.

For many Giants fans now, he is persona non grata.

They are counting the days and weeks before Brian Daboll yanks him for Drew Lock.

There are Giants fans more eager to move on from Daniel Jones than the front office was when they tried to trade up with the Patriots on draft night for Drake Maye and anoint him their next franchise quarterback beginning in 2025.

The haters would like it to be a fait accompli.

I offer a novel thought:

How about the haters at least give Last Chance Daniel a last chance?

On this May OTA day, Daniel Jones was in the huddle at the beginning for seven-on-sevens in the fieldhouse, the torn ACL he suffered last November no longer a major concern, not requiring a brace, the second neck injury (stinger) behind him, fingers crossed.

“Obviously the goal is to be ready to go by the first day of training camp,” Jones said, “but I’m gonna push to be ready as soon as possible.”

He was asked if he has any doubt that he can be ready for contact come the start of the regular season.

“No I don’t have any doubt about it right now,” Jones said.

On this May OTA day, Daniel Jones is a lame duck. And there very well may be nothing he can do to change the ominous narrative. For Jones, it will be even more of a daunting task to save his Giants career than it was succeeding Eli Manning.

All he has to do is embrace the pressure and perform right off the bat to keep the jackals at bay and be the leader the Giants need him to be. With Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia, he needs to take the Giants back to the playoffs, and get GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll to believe that they can win a Super Bowl with him.

All he has to do is stay healthy and fashion the best year of his six-year career, and probably as more of a pocket passer and less of a Vanilla Vick.

Gulp.

On this May OTA day, Daniel Jones is a lame duck because of the 2025 escape-hatch management included in his contract, and because Schoen and Daboll had googly eyes for his replacement.

“I don’t think you can take anything personally at this level,” Jones said. “How exactly it happened and what happened, I’m not sure I know and I’m not sure you know. At the end of the day, I’m focused on playing good football.’’

There is plenty of handwriting on the Big Blue wall, but Jones isn’t interested in reading it right now.

“I feel good about where we’re going, I feel good about this team, and my job is to get healthy and play good football,” he said.

Jones watched and waited for how the draft might affect his Giants career, whether the Giants landing a first-round quarterback or not landing a first-round quarterback would signal a vote against him or a vote for him, when in fact it may be moot anyway.

He managed a chuckle and said, “Yeah, I mean, I wasn’t fired up about it. But I think it’s part of it at this level. What I can do is focus on myself and getting healthy, play the best football I can play, and that I know I’m capable of playing. So that’s my job, and that’s what I’m gonna do.”

For the first time in his six-year Giants career, he will have a true No. 1 wide receiver in rookie Malik Nabers. Not previously getting him one had been one of the ways that John Mara’s Giants had done everything possible to screw this kid up.

And it is premature, given what we have witnessed across the years, to declare that the offensive line, with free-agent newcomers, has finally been fixed, but maybe, just maybe, Jones won’t have to be running for his life or be buried under an avalanche of predators.

Lock conducted a large majority of the drills while Jones ventured outdoors to continue his rehab. It doesn’t mean Lock is a clear and present danger to his job.

“I think we’re all trying to do what we can to make this team as good as possible,” Jones said. “Like any other year, I’m competing with the guys in there, and like every room on our team, there’s competition. Like I’ve said, a couple of times, I’m gonna try to get healthy, play good football.”

    Thank you

Daboll was a godsend for Jones in 2022. In 2023, Jones drowned with the sinking ship — two touchdowns, six interceptions, 30 sacks on 160 pass attempts, with 40-for-206 and one TD rushing. He could not elevate his team.

“I always feel like I have a lot to prove,” Jones said.

He needs Nabers to be his godsend now.

“I’m fired up to get Malik,’’ Jones said. “I watched some of his tape in college. He’s a dynamic, dynamic player. I was fired up to see that we got him. It’s been fun getting to work with him.’’

CB Cor’Dale Flott was two years ahead of Nabers at LSU.

“You could trust him,” Flott told The Post, “so I feel like that’s what a quarterback mostly wants out of a receiver: trust.”

Flott compared Nabers to another former LSU stud: Ja’Marr Chase. “They’re kind of similar,” Flott said.

Daniel Jones was booed when he was drafted. He turned the jeers to cheers and won the Giants’ first playoff game in 11 seasons when no one had any hope that he could.

Now he must weather the perfect storm that rains invective down on him.

How about the haters give the guy a chance?
