NextImg:Giants’ Deonte Banks remorseful for vulgar Commanders rant ‘accident’ he took too far

Deonte Banks regrets letting the trash talk from a heated game spill over onto social media.

The rookie Giants cornerback went viral Sunday for a video he published from the victorious postgame locker room ripping the Commanders for drafting cornerback Emmanuel Forbes over him at No. 16.

Banks, who grew up in Baltimore, not far from Washington’s stadium in Landover, Md., slipped to No. 24 and was the fourth cornerback taken in the first round.

“I love being a Giant. It was nothing against the Giants,” Banks said after Wednesday’s practice. “It was a little friendly trash talk that I took too far.”

In the video, Banks said that the Commanders “could’ve came and got me at [pick] 16, and they didn’t. Now I’m 2-0 against you bum-ass boys. F–k the Commanders. They think they slick. They gonna see me two times a year until the end of my career.”

Banks was surprised when the video began getting so much attention.

“As soon as it came out, I was like, ‘Ah, I didn’t even mean to do all that,’ ” Banks said. “It was just a bad decision on my part. We always talk about being a pro, and it was real unprofessional on my end.

Head coach Brian Daboll opted to keep private details of his conversation with Banks, but it was clear that he disapproved.

“We don’t want to do that,” Daboll said.

After recording his first career interception in the Giants’ earlier win against the Commanders in Week 7, Banks limited No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin to five catches for 43 yards Sunday to complete the two-game sweep.

He shaded McLaurin in the video.

“Did No. 17 play today? That’s all I want to know,” Banks said.

Asked if McLaurin might use that slight as motivation in future matchups, Banks said, “I don’t know. He might just look at it and be like, ‘Whatever.’ Maybe he [will].”

Banks denied he was “genuinely hurt” by the hometown Commanders drafting Forbes, who is ranked No. 94 among cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus.

    Banks is No. 108.

“I’m not really worried about what I’ve shown them,” Banks said. “I just worry about what I show the Giants so that I can stay here and keep going — that I’m a good player and I keep getting better every week. I’ve had some rough moments, but I’ve also had some great moments, too. [I want to] finish strong.”

Banks said that he will take a different approach to what he shares on social media in the future.

“It’s a lesson learned for me,” Banks said. “That’s never happened to me before, to be blown up like that. I didn’t know it was going to be as big as it was. It was an accident, really.”
