NextImg:Giants’ Daniel Bellinger shows he can benefit from Darren Waller: ‘Right mindset’

There is a place on the Giants and together on the field for Daniel Bellinger and Darren Waller.

The newcomer Waller is the most talked-about Giants player this summer, a towering tight end who could become Daniel Jones’ most lethal target.

Waller caught three passes on the opening drive Friday night in a 21-19 preseason victory over the Panthers

It was not Waller, though, who completed the drive with a 4-yard touchdown catch.

That highlight went to Bellinger, the second-year tight end who could end up being a beneficiary of all the attention paid to Waller by opposing defenses.

“He’s got the right mindset, kind of the person we’re looking for,’’ head coach Brian Daboll said Saturday. “He’s smart, he’s tough, he’s dependable, he’s a good teammate, works hard, puts the team first.

“I think it’s good to have veterans in the room who can help those players as well, those young players. I think he’s made strides from when he played last year to where he’s at now.

“Has a good player in the room to learn from as well now.’’

RB Saquon Barkley was the only projected starter on offense or defense who did not play. “We have a plan for each one of our guys and that was his plan,’’ Daboll said. … The most limited players on offense were Jones, Waller and left tackle Andrew Thomas, who were on the field for the 10-play opening series and then got the rest of the night off.

On defense, most starters played two series. Rookie cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins played three series, as did safety Jason Pinnock.

Evan Neal, in his first game since coming out of concussion protocol, played 34 snaps at right tackle.

“It was good to have him out there,’’ Daboll said. “He showed well in this game.’’

Undrafted rookie WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton had two catches for 24 yards, but it is his ability to play on special teams that could separate him from the large pack at a crowded position.

The 6-foot-3 Ford-Wheaton is playing gunner in the kicking game, a line on his résumé the other receivers in the mix do not have.

He played 27 snaps on offense Friday, and, more significantly, 11 snaps on special teams.

General manager Joe Schoen mentioned Ford-Wheaton when he was interviewed during the game on the television broadcast.

“It’s really not that difficult, because for some of the players, if they don’t do it they’re not going to be on the team,’’ Daboll said of finding a role on special teams. “If you’re not a starter and you can’t do it you’re probably not going to be around very long.’’

Rookie QB Tommy DeVito again made a case for his inclusion on the practice squad.

He played the entire second half and completed 9 of 11 passes for 88 yards, although he did not generate any points.

DeVito is 24-for-35 for 243 yards in the two preseason games.

CB Rodarius Williams was released.

Williams, a sixth-round pick in 2021, tore an ACL as a rookie and played in only three games last season.

He never gained a foothold this summer, and the younger cornerbacks on the roster, notably Hawkins, supplanted Williams on the depth chart.
