Perhaps it was just the photography angle, the precise overlap of Daniel Bellinger’s flexed arms making a catch and a camera’s snapped lens during a recent Giants OTA session.
Or maybe Bellinger put an extra emphasis on arm workouts this offseason.
The tight end’s biceps appeared significantly larger than last season in a photo posted by the Giants on Friday, prompting some jokes and photos comparing Bellinger to his rookie OTAs on social media
He’ll need every extra benefit any additional strength can provide in order to maintain relevance on the roster after Darren Waller’s arrival.
Bellinger’s path to reclaiming the starting tight end role was disrupted when the Giants acquired Waller from the Raiders in March, sending back a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and adding a player that immediately became a top target for quarterback Daniel Jones.
Waller said the “trade caught me off guard, but that’s the nature of the business.”
Still, Bellinger would inherit a substantial role if Waller — who has dealt with injuries throughout his career and only logged 20 games since 2021 — missed time.
Bellinger also serves an important role as a blocker.
Bellinger caught 30 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns during his rookie regular season in 2022 after the Giants selected him out of San Diego State with their fourth-round pick.
He also caught a touchdown during the Giants’ wild-card victory against the Vikings.
But Bellinger also dealt with an eye injury that caused him to miss four games.
When a Jaguars defender poked him in the eye during a tackle attempt on Oct. 23, Bellinger was taken to a hospital.
The scene that caused a fracture around his eye socket scared Bellinger and his family, but he returned in Week 13 and caught a career-high five passes in the Giants’ tie against the Commanders.
Then, with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter against the Vikings on Jan. 15, Bellinger cut toward the pylon as Jones rolled left, and he collected the touchdown pass that gave the Giants a 24-14 lead en route to their first playoff victory since 2012 — though their season ended the following weekend against the Eagles.
It appears Bellinger has bulked up since that point, too.
