NextImg:Giants appear to bench Deonte Banks as first-rounder’s miserable season hits new low

Deonte Banks appears to have been benched.

The struggling second-year cornerback — whom the Giants drafted with the No. 24 overall pick last year — was replaced by Greg Stroman during the second quarter of the team’s “Monday Night Football” clash against the Steelers.

Banks was benched after he was hurdled by Steelers running back Najee Harris on a big run, which reportedly led to head coach Brian Daboll getting after him “pretty strongly” on the sideline.

There was no injury announced for Banks.

The Giants trailed, 9-6, at the time.

Stroman was drafted by Washington in the seventh round of the 2018 draft and signed to the Giants practice squad this past offseason.

The Giants activated him off the practice squad on Monday.

Banks, though, saved a touchdown earlier in the game by pushing Steelers receiver George Pickens out of bounds.

Banks has notably been called out twice over his effort previously this season.

During the Giants’ Week 4 loss to the Cowboys, Banks was yelled at by defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson after giving up while in pursuit of CeeDee Lamb on a 55-yard touchdown catch-and-run.

Last week, Banks gave up on another play, this time a scramble from Jalen Hurts.

Head coach Brian Daboll said this past week that he wouldn’t suspend or bench Banks and that it was handled in-house.
