Joe Schoen was the assistant general manager in Buffalo when the Bills made Boogie Basham, a defensive end out of Wake Forest, a second round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Schoen currently runs the show for the Giants as their general manager and Tuesday he dipped into his scouting roots, acquiring Basham from the Bills to add depth to the defensive line.

The teams will swap late-round picks in the 2025 draft, according to NFL Network.

Schoen certainly knows what he needs to know about Basham, having studied him in the draft process and spending the 2021 season with him in Buffalo.

Basham, 25, was going to get cut by the Bills and it is unlikely he would have been available to the Giants for a waiver claim.

Thus, Schoen was proactive in adding a player with potential who has not blossomed in his first two NFL seasons.

Basham played in eight games as a rookie and had 2.5 sacks. He played in 15 games in 2022 and had two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.

He has 37 total tackles in 23 career games – zero starts.

Basham played 39 percent of the defensive snaps for the Bills last season. He also has two sacks in four career playoff games.

With good size — 6-foot-3, 281 pounds — and a skillset to be able to put pressure on the quarterback, Basham is the sort of player Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is often able to utilize.

Earlier this summer, Schoen sent a seventh-round pick in 2024 to the Cardinals in exchange for Isaiah Simmons, a versatile inside linebacker who was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Simmons made his preseason debut for the Giants in last Saturday night’s loss to the Jets, one day after arriving. He is expected to have a role in Week 1, when the Giants host the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.
