NextImg:Giancarlo Stanton: ‘I didn’t do my part’ when Yankees needed me most

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There are times during this season when Giancarlo Stanton has looked at his exit velocity and other advanced metrics and has been encouraged by them, even if the production hasn’t been there.

That hasn’t been the case for a while, which makes the rut he has been struggling to escape for much of the season even more difficult to deal with.

“I’m at the point of the year where none of that [stuff] matters,’’ a frustrated Stanton said Saturday before going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a 3-0 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field. “Now, it’s ‘Did you do enough to help win the game? Did I impact the game? Yes or no?’ ”

For an eight-game stretch as the Yankees’ season has slipped away, the answer was clear, as Stanton went through a 1-for-22 slump that included 10 strikeouts.

“I didn’t do my part at an important moment in the season,’’ Stanton said.

He had gone 5-for-9 with three extra-base hits and four RBIs in his previous two games before the 0-fer on Saturday. Overall, he’s hitting just .202 with a .723 OPS.

Giancarlo Stanton said he’s frustrated about his sub-par season, just like Yankees fans are.

“How I performed this year has already run its course,’’ Stanton said. “There’s no coming back from that this season. Now, it’s about what I do every night from here on out and did I do something to contribute to a win. If I didn’t, there’s no, ‘I hit the ball hard this many times.’ Throw that [stuff] out the window. It’s too late for that. That’s fine the first couple months. Now, I don’t want to hear it.”

Asked what changes he can make heading into next season, Stanton didn’t specify any, but insisted there would be plenty.

“Changes? There have been plenty of [expletive] changes,’’ Stanton said. “It’s more about take the good and throw everything else as [expletive] deep in the ocean as possible and move forward.”

Stanton said he understands fans’ frustrations with his performance this season.

Stanton once again has become a target of their wrath, both in The Bronx and among Yankees fans on the road.

“Whatever they do, it’s nothing compared to how I feel,’’ he said.

Following his two-game outburst at the plate, Stanton echoed DJ LeMahieu’s sentiments in crediting new hitting coach Sean Casey’s approach.

“He’s been great,’’ Stanton said of Casey. “He has an awesome outlook on hitting and approach. He understands it’s a long year and the ups and downs of it. He understands that no matter how you perform, you have to stay the course.”
