Mychal Givens, pitching in his fifth game with the 2022 Mets, was trying to impress as a trade-deadline addition whose tenure in Queens had begun poorly. 

The reliever entered a tie game in the top of the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/08/12/mets-waste-max-scherzers-gem-in-extra-inning-loss-to-phillies/">10th inning against the Phillies on Aug. 12</a> and did everything well. 

Rhys Hoskins grounded out. Alec Bohm flew out. J.T. Realmuto struck out.

For his good work, Givens was awarded an unearned run and tagged with a loss after the Mets’ bats failed in the bottom of the inning. 

The ghost runner gained sentience in 2020 as a pandemic measure to shorten games.
