Jacklyn Zeman, who played Bobbie Spencer on the ABC soap opera General Hospital since 1977, died on Wednesday (May 10). She was 70.
News of Zeman’s death was announced by General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini later that night.
Valentini wrote in a statement posted to Twitter that evening, “I am heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Jackie Zeman.”
He continued, “Just like her character, the legendary Bobbie Spencer, she was a bright light and true professional that brought so much positive energy with her to work.”
ABC also released statement about Zeman’s passing, praising the actress and noting the legacy of the character she created.
“Jacklyn Zeman has been a beloved member of the ‘General Hospital’ and ABC family since she originated the iconic role of Bobbie Spencer over 45 years ago,” the network’s statement read. “She leaves behind a lasting legacy for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of the bad girl turned heroine and will always be remembered for her kind heart and radiant spirit.”
Several of Zeman’s past co-stars, including John Stamos, Jon Lindstrom and Rick Springfield also mourned her passing.
Zeman was nominated for four Daytime Emmys during her time playing Bobbie Spencer, a character she originated in 1977 and played until 2010 when she took a break from the show. She returned to GH as Bobbie in 2013 and recurred on the show until her death.
Outside of General Hospital, she also acted in One Life To Live, The Bay and National Lampoon’s Class Reunion. Zeman is survived by her two daughters, Cassidy and Lacey, the children she shares with ex-husband Glenn Gorden, whom she divorced in 2007. No cause of death has been confirmed.
