Gen Z holds the tightest grip on their wallets when it comes to adding gratuity with the younger generation less likely to tip service workers than millennials, Gen Xers and baby boomers, a survey conducted by Bankrate found.

The tendency to tip correlates with increased age, according to the survey results.

Gen Zers are the least likely to give some extra cash to waitstaff, hairdressers and other service employees while baby boomers are the most likely.

Just 35% of Gen Zers said they always tip when they go out to eat at a sit-down restaurant — compared to 83% of baby boomers surveyed.

Even fewer of the college-aged generation said they always tip their hairdressers and barbers.

A measly 24% of Gen Z respondents said they add gratuity to the cost of a haircut or color, while three times as many baby boomers — 70% — always tip at the salon, according to the study.

One category where Gen Zers appear to be the most generous generation, however, is for home services or repairs.

The young adults are the most likely to always tip for such services at 15% and baby boomers are the least at just 6% in a reversal of the overall generational trend discovered through the survey.

Around 24% of Gen Z respondents said they add gratuity to the cost of a haircut or color, while around 70% of baby boomers likely will tip at the salon, according to the study.

Tipping practices also differ based on the sex of the customer.

Men are less likely than women to tip waiters, hairstylists and barbers, food delivery workers and taxi and rideshare drivers, the survey found.

The biggest gap exists at salons and barbershops.

About 46% of male respondents said they always tip their barber while 60% of women said they give their hair stylists extra.

Overall, fewer Americans are tipping each year no matter the service, according to the study.

For instance, the number of US adults who said they always leave a tip for restaurant serves — the most likely to be tipped — decreased by 10 percentage points in just two years, from 75% in 2021 to 65% in 2023.

The number of adults paying gratuity to hair stylists and barbers also dropped by 10 from 63% in 2021 to 53% in 2023.

“Inflation and general economic unease seem to be making Americans stingier with their tipping habits, yet we’re confronted with more invitations to tip than ever,” Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst Ted Rossman said.

The survey also found that nearly one in three Americans thinks that tipping culture has gotten out of control in recent years as more businesses encourage tipping on payment screens.

Despite being the best tippers, older generations are the most fed up by the seemingly never-ending tip screens.

According to the survey, 33% of baby boomers and 33% of Gen Xers feel that tipping culture has gone overboard compared to 27% of millennials and 22% of Gen Zers.

The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is just $2.13 per hour, according to the US Department of Labor.

Two in five adults surveyed said they believe businesses should pay their employees better instead of relying on customers to make up the difference with tips.
