Two Israelis were shot and killed on Thursday near the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan by a man allegedly driving an aid truck bound for the Gaza Strip, officials said.

The gunman, who was only identified as a Jordanian, was “transporting humanitarian aid from Jordan” when he opened fire on two Israelis along the Allenby Bridge crossing, the only entry point to the West Bank that does not go through Israel, the IDF said.

The two victims, described to be a man in his 20s and a man in his 60s, died at the scene.

Security forces returned fire and killed the gunman, according to the Israeli military.

The gunman stepped out of his vehicle at an Israeli checkpoint when entering the occupied-West bank, firing on the victims when his truck was being inspected, Ynet News reported.

The killer’s motives are currently unknown, and the IDF is carrying out scans in the areas around the West bank city of Jericho.

The shooting comes a little over a year since three Israeli civilians were shot dead at the same crossing by a 39-year-old Jordanian driver.

Officials in Jordan, a US ally and the second Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel, have yet to respond to the incident.

While Jordan serves as a key partner to Israel in the Middle East, relations between the nations have grown tense over the ongoing war in Gaza and bombing in Qatar.

Jordan has also maintained a flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza through land crossings with Israel and the West Bank.

Since the start of the war, Amman has facilitated nearly 10,000 trucks of aid into the Gaza Strip, or about 7% of total deliveries, according to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories.
