NextImg:Gary Cohen crushes Mets’ Brandon Nimmo for ninth-inning stolen-base attempt: ‘What is he doing?!’

Brandon Nimmo giveth, Brandon Nimmo taketh away.

The Mets were on the precipice of getting swept by the Tigers in Detroit Thursday afternoon when Nimmo gave them life in the ninth inning with a one-out single.

But Nimmo inexplicably tried to steal second base with Starling Marte up and was thrown out by catcher Jake Rogers, prompting Gary Cohen to lose it on the outfielder on the SNY broadcast.

“What is he doing?! You’re down by two runs in the ninth. Why are you trying to steal?” Cohen said immediately upon Nimmo getting thrown out.

“That one’s incomprehensible,” Cohen later said after noting Rogers threw out Tommy Pham on a steal attempt earlier in the game.

“And he hasn’t really tried for a stolen base in multiple games,” Keith Hernandez said of Nimmo, who has three steals this season but none since April 10.

Marte then struck out swinging to end the Mets’ 2-0 loss.

The caught stealing was Nimmo’s first of the season.

Nimmo, whom the Mets re-signed to an eight-year, $162 million contract in free agency over the winter, has never stolen more than nine bases in a season, which he did in 2018.

The 30-year-old former first-round pick stole three bases last year and five in 2021.

Nimmo finished the game 1-for-4 with a strikeout.

The leadoff hitter is batting .302 with an .825 OPS, two home runs, 13 RBIs and 17 runs this season.

Justin Verlander made his Mets debut in the loss, giving up two runs in five innings with five strikeouts.

He allowed both runs on consecutive solo home runs in the first inning.

The Mets are now 16-16 and have lost nine of their last 11 games.
