NextImg:'Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told' trailer travels back to the "greatest Black gathering in America"

A spring break picnic had the power to turn the highway into a “street party” with Freaknik, and thanks to Hulu, we’re all getting VIP tickets to the show. The streamer just debuted the first look at Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, an upcoming documentary from Luke Campbell, Jermaine Dupri and 21 Savage.

Today’s trailer gives a glimpse at the ’80s and ’90s phenomenon of Freaknik, an Atlanta festival described by one documentary subject as “an entry point into the Black cultural experience.”

While the event started small, it eventually caught the attention of huge stars like Tupac Shakur, Usher and OutKast. At one point in the trailer, former NBA player Jalen Rose recalls thinking of Freaknik, “I don’t know what heaven looks like, but this seems like a version of it.”

Still, not everything went smoothly for the annual party. While Freaknik began as a small college gathering, it morphed into a rather infamous event.

“The legacy of Freaknik is Black joy [and] Black self-determination … but the legacy of Freaknik is also the ugly side,” professor and activist Marc Lamont Hill says in the trailer, while rapper Rasheeda recalls how the festival got “out of control” as “masses” of people began to attend.

Along with Rose, Hill and Rasheeda, Freaknik features plenty of other starry talking heads, including Lil Jon, CeeLo Green, Too $hort, Killer Mike, Kenny Burns, Sharon Toomer, Amadi Boon and Tony Towns.

If today’s trailer emphasizes anything about Freaknik, it’s that the event was unlike anything else.

“If you tried to bring back Freaknik, it wouldn’t be what it was,” former music executive Shanti Das says in the trailer. While we can’t travel back in time to the iconic event, we can experience it when the doc drops on Hulu.

Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told premieres March 21 on Hulu. Watch the full trailer above.
