NextImg:Francisco Alvarez’s swift return to the lineup can’t help Mets offense

Francisco Alvarez didn’t waste a moment returning to the Mets’ lineup.

The rookie catcher started in the 3-1 Subway Series loss to the Yankees on Wednesday, a night after he departed the game following a pitch that struck his right middle finger on a swing.

X-rays were negative and further imaging wasn’t deemed necessary, according to manager Buck Showalter, based on strength tests performed by the team’s medical staff.

“It would be pretty self-evident if there was something there,” Showalter said.

Alvarez, who went 1-for-4 with a single as the Mets had only four hits Wednesday, has been a force in the lineup.

His 19 homers are tied for second on the team with Francisco Lindor behind Pete Alonso’s 28.

Alonso was called for interference in the first inning, negating Lindor’s steal of second.

Alonso, on his backswing, hit catcher Kyle Higashioka, bringing the call from plate umpire Doug Eddings.

“It had nothing to do with the throw because it was already released,” Showalter said. “It’s one of those plays you would like to analyze a little deeper, but that is the rule and they called it.”

Tommy Pham returned to the starting lineup — as the DH, going 0-for-4 — for the first time since he left the game last Thursday against the White Sox with right groin tightness.

Pham was available to play defense if needed, according to Showalter, but the manager’s preference was to wait before returning him to left field.

Though Starling Marte is eligible to come off the injured list Thursday, the outfielder may remain sidelined. Marte and his wife are awaiting the arrival of a baby, according to Showalter.

The veteran outfielder was placed on the IL last week with migraines, but has been working out with the team in recent days.

Danny Mendick’s third-inning double was the Mets’ only extra-base hit of the night. The hit was Mendick’s first in 10 at-bats for the club this season.

The Mets have been successful in all 18 of their stolen bases attempts in July.

For the season they are 79-for-86 in stolen base attempts for a 91.9 percent success rate, which ranks first in MLB.
