The Mets’ struggles this season have led to the possibility of a trade-deadline sale, but rookie Francisco Alvarez’s performance in the 11-10 win over the White Sox on Tuesday night painted a hopeful future.
Alvarez hit a pair of two-run home runs, starting off with a blast that also scored Francisco Lindor as part of the Mets’ five-run surge in the first inning.
He homered again, to deep center this time, to increase the Mets’ lead to 11-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, also knocking in Jeff McNeil.
Alvarez finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
The power of Alvarez’s bat continues to grow, as he has seven homers in July.
Mets manager Buck Showalter, however, also complimented the catcher for his patience in picking his spots to swing.
“The walks he took tonight were impressive. You have that type of power at your fingertips, you want to swing. You want to hit the ball. You want to make it go a long way,” Showalter said after the game.
“So, the ability to not get out of the strike zone and use your aggressiveness against you, some of the best of things I’ve enjoyed watching him starting to walk a little bit more and realize a little bit more what they’re trying to do to him.”
His 19 home runs make him the leader among catchers this season and are the most by a catcher in his age-21 or younger season since Johnny Bench hit 26 in 1969.
He is also on an absurd pace for 42 home runs in a 162-game season, but Alvarez doesn’t seem fazed by any of the numbers on his stat sheet.
“Why not?” he said through his interpreter following the game when asked if he expected to contribute this much this quickly.
“I’m not putting much mind to it. I just want to continue to go out there because the games are still meaningful and I expect to hit more home runs,” Alvarez said.
“I don’t know how many home runs Johnny Bench hit and I’m not really focused on that right now.”

Alvarez has continued to prove himself as one of the Mets’ top guys after he made his way through the minor leagues tallying 51 home runs between 2021 and 2022, and two more in the four games he played for Triple-A Syracuse this season.
“Proud of him. There’s still a lot of baseball to play and a lot of people are very proud of their young players too,” Showalter said when asked about Alvarez as a contender for Rookie of the Year.
