Francisco Alvarez’s opportunity with the Mets has arrived.
The organization’s top prospect is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse before Friday’s home opener, after the team announced Thursday that Omar Narvaez will be placed on the injured list with a medium-to-high grade strain in his left calf, as revealed by imaging.
The typical timeline to resume playing with such an injury, according to the Mets, is 8-9 weeks.
Alvarez was notified on Wednesday that he was needed in New York in case Narvaez needed an IL stint.
Narvaez departed the Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Brewers in the ninth inning with discomfort.
It leaves the 21-year-old Alvarez in position to show he is ready, after a spring training in which team officials wanted him to focus on his receiving skills behind the plate.
Team brass will have to decide how much playing time to give Alvarez, with Tomas Nido also in the mix at catcher.
The Mets signed Narvaez in the offseason with the idea he could platoon with Nido, giving the team a lefty/righty bat combo behind the plate.
Alvarez was off to a strong start offensively for Syracuse with a 1.056 OPS and two homers in four games.
Narvaez joins a crowded injured list that includes Justin Verlander, Edwin Diaz, Jose Quintana and Tommy Hunter, among others.
Diaz is likely lost for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and Quintana will be sidelined at least into July after undergoing rib surgery.
Verlander is recovering from a teres major strain near his right armpit, and the most recent imaging showed decreased swelling, according to the Mets. The veteran reliever Hunter was placed on the IL earlier this week with back spasms.
