A hatchet-wielding maniac killed four children and wounded at least five others when he broke into a daycare in Brazil and started attacking.
The madman jumped over a wall to get into the playground of Cantinho do Bom Pastor, a private daycare in Blumenau, and slaughtered four children between the ages of five and seven, according to news outlets.
After the attack, the suspect then turned himself in at a local police station.
The detective leading the investigation said the motive for the attack has not been determined –but the man does not appear to have any connections with the center.
The five injured children were taken to hospitals. One remained in critical condition on Wednesday.
Images from the aftermath show distraught parents clutching their children at the entrance to the center, which offers nursery care, preschool, and after-school activities.
Blumenau’s mayor, Mário Hildebrandt, suspended classes for the day and declared a 30-day mourning period.
“There is no greater pain than that of a family that loses its children or grandchildren, even more so in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children,” Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
“My condolences and prayers to the families of the victims and the community of Blumenau in the face of the monstrosity that occurred at the Bom Pastor day care center.”
The daycare attack is the second incident of school violence in recent days. Last week, a student in Sao Paulo fatally stabbed a 71-year-old teacher and wounded several others.
