Last week’s all-new installment of Foundation on Apple TV+ ended with the very juicy reveal that the current iteration of Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) has been working secretly with Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) and the Second Foundation. Now, in Foundation Season 3 Episode 3 “When a Book Finds You,” we’ve discovered how this strange alliance started. As the episode title suggests, it all began with a book…

**Spoilers for Foundation Season 3 Episode 3 “When a Book Finds You,” now streaming on Apple TV+**

Foundation Season 3 Episode 3 “When a Book Finds You” opens three years ago. Brother Dawn struts into the library on Trantor asking to read more about Psychohistory. Specifically, Kalle’s Ninth Proof of Folding, aka the text that kicked off Hari Seldon’s (Jared Harris) whole journey in the first place.

Librarian Nee Tellamarus (Vibeke Hastrup) takes Dawn alone to find the long-banned book and is pleased when the young clone of the original Emperor Cleon figures out that it’s somehow the original text. When he asks how the artifact made to back to Trantor when it was last seen with Gaal Dornick, the librarian reveals that she was asked to connect whomever asked about the book and its story to a friend.

The next night, Brother Dawn slips out of the palace to visit this mysterious person at a teahouse and is floored to realize…it’s Gaal Dornick.

“Cassian and I have been friends since Season 1 and we’ve really grown up together on the show and he’s one of my closest friends,” Foundation star Lou Llobell said. “It was so exciting to get to work with him.”

Bilton and Llobell’s chemistry leaps off the screen, leaving DECIDER to wonder aloud to Llobell if Gaal was intentionally trying to flirt a little bit with the historically more romantic youngest iteration of Cleon.

“Yeah, I mean, I do think there is an element of that,” Llobell said. “You know, she knows the history. She’s knowledgeable, she’s done her research.”

“She also knows that he is susceptible to being convinced because he’s already opened the little window of like going, ‘Huh. I’m curious to know about this.’ He’s arrived. He’s gotten as far as to take the chance to meet some unknown person to find out more about the Ninth Proof of Folding.”

In past seasons, Brother Dawn has indeed tried to run away with a lover and even, in the case of Queen Sareth (Ella-Rae Smith), succeeded in doing so. Is there any chance he might latch onto Gaal in this way?

“I mean, she does definitely manipulate him a bit,” Llobell said, “but I also do think she does actually like him.”

“Maybe not romantically, but I do think she cares for him in some way.

Okay, so maybe the only places Gaal Dornick and Brother Dawn get together are in fan fiction.
