College football is back, but the University of Florida didn’t seem all that ready for a punt situation on Thursday night.
With 9:38 left in the second quarter against Utah and down 7-3, the Gators forced a punt and looked to be taking over in their own territory, but then took a penalty — for having two players wearing the same jersey number.
Usually, on a punt, one would expect to see a team flagged for offside, holding, an illegal block or even running into the punter.
But not this time, as Florida had two players on the field — Jason Marshall Jr. and Eugene Wilson — both donning the No. 3, which is an equipment violation.
ESPN play-by-play man Chris Fowler explained that Marshall was supposed to wear No. 33, but somehow didn’t change this number before the game.
Wilson had caught the ball at the Gators’ own five-yard line, but the fair catch was completely wiped out as a five-yard penalty on the fourth-and-3 situation gave Utah a first down.
The Utes took full advantage of the blunder, scoring four plays later when Nate Johnson scrambled through the entire Florida defense for 27 yards on a quarterback keeper.
Social media had plenty to say about the Florida miscue.
“Equipment violation on the field for Florida. Football is so back,” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Another said: “Florida is unserious. ‘Equipment violation.'”
One user used plenty of hyperbole to rag on the penalty.
“Florida with two players wearing number 3 on the field during a Punt and it costing them and now turning into a TD is the most boneheaded penalty of all time! Thats on the Florida equipment team,” they wrote.
Things haven’t improved much since then for Florida, as the Gators trail 24-3 in the third quarter.
The Gators are trying to improve on a mediocre 2022 when they finished 6-7.
