Florida’s state Sen. Tom Wright was banned from a women’s shelter for inappropriate and lewd behavior six years before he was accused of aggressively lunging at its CEO, according to a report.

The then-philanthropist allegedly flirted with and preyed on a young mother who was fleeing 2017 storm Hurricane Irma with her infant from the Beacon Center, Volusia County’s only shelter for survivors of domestic violence.

While on a short bus that he paid for, Wright told Shelby Dunlap about prostitutes in Cuba and topless women on a boat before offering to fly her out to Las Vegas, she recalled to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

“It’s kind of embarrassing to say, but whenever you’re going through that, especially I was only, like, 20 years old, but you feel like, OK, there’s this rich guy, like, that could help me out of my problems,” Dunlap said, adding that though she didn’t accept the offer, she still feels discomfort over the conversation.

“But now I realize, you know, he was a creep.”

Wright was swiftly booted from the Beacon Center after its then-CEO learned about his “grooming type of behavior.”

“It wasn’t anything egregious,” Angie Pye said of the encounter. “I put a stop to him coming on the property. He got really angry.”

Wright was elected to the Florida State Senate the following year and began to unleash a years-long stream of unproven accusations that human trafficking, prostitution and drug use run rampant at the center.

The initial incident allegedly occurred nearly six years to the day that the Republican, 71, was accused of putting his hands on a worker at the very same shelter.

Jessica Rivers, who was working as the Beacon Center’s interim CEO at the time of the Sept. 2 incident, said she rushed up to Wright to stop him from boarding a bus full of domestic abuse survivors and their children.

Video shows the pair arguing, with Wright allegedly stating he was only interested in speaking with the driver before the politician can be seen placing his hand on Rivers’ shoulder, an incident report obtained by the Orlando Sentinel states.

Rivers — allegedly fearing he was going to strike her — shouted “Do not put your hands on me!”

Wright initially stepped back before lunging toward her and appearing to bark in her face as she backed away.

A third employee steps in to break up the argument, though Wright can be seen continuing to argue and point with his fingers.

“He came at me. It wasn’t a friendly touch, but the touch of a parent or authority type striking me to get my attention,” Rivers told the Sentinel, adding that she was pressured to resign a few days after the incident.

Wright was issued a trespass warning by Daytona Beach police at Rivers’ request, but only after the center’s board of directors gave him a tour of the facility.

Several other current and former employees at the Beacon Center recounted various times the state senator erupted in anger and behaved inappropriately before his time in office when he served as a volunteer for the facility.

One woman claims Wright “ripped” CDs that were being donated out of her hands when she told him she hadn’t attended his Christmas party because her child had a basketball tournament.

Others claimed Wright was behind several complaints that led to spontaneous state investigations of the center.

As a government leader, Wright reportedly tried to tarnish the Beacon Center’s reputation by spreading rumors that the directors had conflicts of interest and that the survivors were engaging in sex work and drugs.

Former CEO Pye, who resigned just days before the altercation between Wright and her successor, indicated the politician has repeatedly acted out against the shelter because she was never comfortable with having him work directly with survivors.

She said that in 2017 “Tom had wanted to come on the board of directors. Initially, I thought that was a good fit,” Pye said, adding that board members can’t volunteer so it was another way to ensure he wouldn’t have direct contact with shelter residents.

“He came to one meeting and got his feelings hurt about something and he quit the board,” Pye said.

A spokesperson for Wright did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
