Yankees general manager Brian Cashman struck out when it came to making significant deals ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline.
One fan wants him held accountable.
His name is none other than “JonFromMaspeth.”
Who’s that, you ask?
He was the fan who brought a “Fire Cashman” sign to Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The day for “JohnFromMaspeth” started innocently enough as he proudly showed off his banner outside Yankee Stadium six hours before the trade deadline.
Shortly before first pitch, which was less than an hour after the trade deadline passed, “JonFromMaspeth” tweeted from inside the ballpark.
Tuesday’s game, a 5-2 Yankees loss, featured the infamous “Fire Cashman chant.”
But “JonFomMaspeth” wasn’t happy with the coverage, tweeting, “Not one single Yankees beat writer mentioned anything about the #FireCashman chants tonight. Shame because we know they fear punishment if they do.”
So what did “JonFromMaspeth” do to fix the situation? He returned to the ballpark on Wednesday.
And that’s when things got really interesting.
Less than an hour later, “JonFromMaspeth” returned to social media, because “Security giving me sh–t about the sign now. At first they said it was ‘too close to advertising’ and reflective upon that. Then they said they got a call saying it’s no longer permitted because it’s ‘distasteful about the GM.'”
But wait. There’s more.
Desperate times called for desperate measures by “JonFromMaspeth.”
You can guess where this is going, with “JonFromMaspeth” tweeting, “Top of the 7th, I’m doing it. I want the team to be facing towards home plate to see it. Prob won’t be on tv cause can’t get into Legends, but can do right above it.”
Of course, it wasn’t that easy.
Finally … the effort paid off.
So what did “JonFromMaspeth” get for his effort? A 7-2 Yankees win.
Will it be the beginning of something special?
Or just another footnote for a last-place club?
One thing is certain: “JonFromMaspeth” will be watching.
